Why Holidays Could Be Just What Your Body Needs

One of the biggest motivations that drives people to holiday is stress reduction. Maybe they are having a tough time at work and want to get out of the office and into a swim suit where they don't have to worry about phone calls or emails for 2 weeks. But often people don’t realize just how important this stress reduction is to their health and why? Let’s take a look at how holidays can bring that blood pressure down and may even save your life.


Sun. Provider of all heat and light to the globe, the sun is often most peoples best friend on holiday. On top of all the more obvious benefits that the sun brings, such as letting us experience more of the outdoors and giving us a tan, their are deeper, more psychological benefits also. Low levels of light cause the receptors in the eye to trigger a chain reaction in which the body is flooded with melatonin. The result of this is a feeling of sleepiness, sluggishness and fatigue. When the sun is beaming however, when you’re experiencing summer Canada holidays for example, the eyes take in a lot of light, less melatonin is produced and we feel more energized, happy and less stressed.


Less worry. The chemical reaction that happens when we are stressed or anxious about something that is instinctive but rarely beneficial. The adrenal glands are stimulated by the hypothalamus to increase the levels or cortisol and adrenaline in the blood. Blood pressure, rate of breathing, and pulse (among other things) then increases as a result. If these are maintained at a high rate for a sustained length of time then damage can occur to any of the organs involved.
